Maribou State feat. Holly Walker – Tongue (James Welsh Remix)
Liam Ivory and Chris Davids make up the duo that is Maribou State, a live act hailing from the UK that, given the short time the two have actually been producing together, is fast gaining fans of their ethereal, emotive take on bass music. Their sound is most appropriate for mellow thinking sessions on the floor of your bedroom than for the dance-floor, and more often than not utilizes chopped vocals to create a pensive mood for their listeners.
Maribou State’s newest release is Tongue, featuring the vocals of Holly Walker. The five-track EP, out today on Southern Fried Records, does not stray from their sound, with Walker’s voice reaching the high heavens with angelic harmonies over a moody, rolling bass-line in the title track; the song makes a good companion for long train-rides or drives, soundtracking your own little world gated by iPod earbuds. What really steals the show on the record, however, is a remix by Hypercolour artist James Welsh, whose take on “Tongue” is delectably deep. Welsh adds more fluidity to the rhythm with some gorgeous, floating chords; meanwhile, the subtlest filtering and pitching of Walker’s vocals result in a more sultry tone. It’s a little faster than the original, and more likely to be found playing in a club, though most likely for a winding-down after-hours set early in the morning.
The Tongue EP can be purchased on iTunes and Beatport. A stream of both the original “Tongue” and its James Welsh remix are available for listening below.
