2013 has been an insane year for Yves V, so we caught up with him for an interview to get a brief look into his amazing life:
-
ICGYH: First off, for those who are still not familiar, who is Yves V?
Yves V: I’m Yves V, 32 years old from Belgium. Since 2007, I’ve been a resident for Tomorrowland performing each year on there mainstage. Nowadays I’m traveling all around the world and sharing my passion for music. People might now me from tracks like Wow, Chained, Cloudbreaker, Sonica, Mandala, Madagascar, etc…
ICGYH: What was your introduction into dance music?
Yves V: When I was a kid I went to music school and played the violin. I bought my first record when I was fifteen. That was the moment when I discovered my passion for EDM.
ICGYH: How would you describe your sound? What makes it unique?
Yves V: I don’t want to be put in a box, but I think I like a nice melodic break and a massive hard drop. It’s really important for me though that as a producer you can make any kind of music you like and are not bound by restrictions of genre.
ICGYH: You’ve been keeping quite busy over the past couple of months. You played three times at Tomorrowworld! What was that experience like? How did you prepare differently for the different stages?
Yves V: One word ‘Amazing’! As resident of Tomorrowland it is not just a festival for me, it is like a homematch, even if its Tomorrowworld. I played three times so it was a hectic weekend for me. Closing the Dreamville stage (camping) on Thursday together with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike was huge as always. On Saturday I played at the mainstage and on Sunday I did a b2b set with Regi. I never prepare too much for my sets besides my intro, I play my best sets when I can interact with the crowd and feed off their energy. The Tomorrowland and Tomorrowworld events are so good for this because the crowd is always so up for it!
ICGYH: What’s the one song in your set that you can’t live without?
Yves V: I think for the moment that’s ‘OneRepublic - If I Lose Myself (Alesso Remix)’
ICGYH: And you also curated your own stage at Tomorrowland! How did that opportunity come about?
Yves V: That was a dream coming true. V-Sessions is the name of my radio show. Last year we had the idea of hosting a stage that gave you the music that I play during my radio shows: a wide range from progressive house to electro house, I invite some of my favorite DJs to join me. Last years line up was with Bingo Players, Felguk, Tristan Garner, Adrian Lux, Bassjackers the list goes on. It was such a huge success that we needed to repeat it and do it bigger. First of all I am happy that I have some producers on my line-up that I admire, such as Pete Tong, Eric Pryds & Nicky Romero. It’s was an honor to work with them. Aside from that I’ve got some great producers and DJs on stage with whom I have collaborated recently, like Michael Calfan and Felguk. We created a new and bigger stage this year and it was a massive success
ICGYH: Even while touring this much, you’ve kept just as busy in the studio as well with two releases on Spinnin’ and Doorn Records. How do you manage your time to get it all done? What’s the hardest part about being on the road?
Yves V: For me the hardest part of being a DJ is the traveling… It makes me feel really tired sometimes. On the road I try to prepare my radio shows, mashups and small ideas for tracks. But the real work happens in the studio when I’m home so I spend all my time there. But when you finish a track then the release date of that track can be months later, depending on your release schedule, label etc.
ICGYH: Give us an under-the-hood of your studio setup. What DAW/plugins and hardware do you use to produce?
Yves V: Mac, Soundcard, monitor speakers, Cubase and Logic (producing) Ableton (Radioshow, Mashups) Sylenth, Nexus, Massive, etc…
ICGYH: We know that Sander van Doorn has been one of your inspirations as a musician, what has the process been like collaborating with him?
Yves V: Sander told me he likes my tracks and I was working on a remake of Direct Dizko which Sander already did a few years ago, so we thought it was a good idea to work on this one together and now its one of the peak time records in my sets. Besides that it is an honour to work with him because I’m a big fan of his work. And the collaboration went very well!
ICGYH: You’ve got a lot of releases coming up correct? What can we look forward to?
Yves V: In October I have a new track coming up with Mell Tierra on Armada Music called ‘Chrono’ In November I have 2 releases coming up on Doorn Records, 1 solo track ‘Umami’ and the collaboration ‘Direct Dizko’ with Sander Van Doorn, so I’m very excited. Besides that I have another one on Doorn Records ‘Manga’ one on Smash The House, Wall Records, etc… So I have a lot of new stuff coming up, I think I have almost every month until next year a release scheduled.
