Coldplay - “Midnight” (Tiësto Tech House Bootleg)
Tiësto has gone recluse. Shedding away his progressive house superpowers, the face of a movement ducks away for a moment behind the dark tranquility of “tech house”. This can’t be what it sounds like, right?
Created as a tribute to fans (apparently 17 million was a good thank you marker), the lightly-techy bootleg is sure to confuse many of the newbies who are only aware of post-trance Tiësto. The vocals are comforting instead of empowering. The bass is resonating instead of energizing. The drop is just not there. Tranquil subtlety has replaced the recent vibrant euphoria. Just as Tiësto began to skew even more towards the youth with “Red Lights”, he’s gone the complete opposite direction.
Interestingly, this all comes at a sort-of turning point for the electronic movement that Tiësto himself had a large part of pioneering. There are signs that Ultra may be done in Miami, shows are being cancelled due to illness and intoxication, and Deadmau5 put out a techno track because “EDM all sounds the same”. (inthemix via Mixmag) This maybe not all that shocking coming from him, but similar sentiment has been echoed by several other djs including Ricky Vaughn who recently had this to say about creativity in EDM; “I don’t see it anywhere”. There is little doubt that Tiësto will come right back with more for the mainstream, but it’s definitely nice to see a superstar of this caliber change things up. This bootleg is for those who are looking for a little something more than the usual. Listen below. Download here.
