Future Classic’s Charles Murdoch debuts with Weathered Straight EP
Last time ICGYH had Charles Murdoch on the site, the Australian producer had been assigned remix duty for baby-faced Hayden James’ debut on Future Classic, the Permission to Love EP. This time around, the Future Classic debut honor goes to Murdoch, whose Weathered Straight EP is a lovely 4-song trip into a deep, dreamy, pensive state perfect for those lazy days of lying on the floor and contemplating the meaning of life.
The EP starts out with “Why,” an instrumental that innocently reels listeners in with its calmness; its heavy beat is quite easy on the ears. Following that is “Dekire,” featuring vocalist Oscar Key Sung, whose faraway voice makes the song feel like it’s coming from within the body rather than from speakers. Like “Why,” it begins softly, lulling listeners into a dream-like state, much like settling into the comfiest part of the couch with a blanket on a cold day. A few minutes in, the song rises into waves of short synths that demand your attention, before disappearing just as quickly as they came. “Light Words VAO” is a little heavier on the beat, with synths that seem to weave in and out around it, while singer Stefaloo’s voice turns it toward hypnotic territory, with vocal loops and the same faraway, echoing effects as OKS. The last song, “No Lungs,” has garage-inspired elements that make it possible to dance and nod your head. It’s a great exit song for an EP that seems to spend most of its time moving the mind rather than the body.
