Billon – Hurt Me ft. Lola Coca

Posted on Jul 24, 2013 in Deep House

After seeing releases from Foamo, Hrdvsion, Huxley, and Krystal Klear, the radio station-turned-label Rinse sees the debut of Billon, of whom little is known. The Turn It Around EP, released little more than a week ago, is made up of four swirling, deep house tunes with a penchant for echoing vocals, bouncing bass-lines, and classic chords that harken back to the days of the 90s.

The clear standout of this EP is its opening track, “Hurt Me,” featuring vocalist Lola Coca. “Hurt Me” made its radio debut back in January when it was played during Skream & Benga’s Radio 1 show, and is finally seeing a release after almost seven months. The song’s emphasis lies on Lola Coca’s strong but sweet voice as she sings to the person who broke her heart, and it is extremely hard to not start singing along with her, even if you don’t relate to the material; oddly, it’s almost a happy sort of sad song. Backed by squelchy bass, airy chords, and a lot of reverb, it’s quick to inspire dancing whether you’re in front of the mirror or in the club. I’m curious how this would sound if Disclosure got their hands on this for a little remix action…
