Boaz van de Beatz - 99 Lights
It’s Thursday so we’re throwing this one back all the way from earlier this month (but it may as well be the late 90s). It’s just too astronomical to miss.
There’s probably thousands of words I could use to describe the genre-skipping “99 Lights”. Boaz van de Beatz is like some kind of other-wordly DJ sent forward through time from a 90s warehouse rave into the “EDM” world we currently live. And he absolutely blows it up. I’m not sure there’s another explanation. The singalong helium voice, reverse bass, rainbow synths, and rumbling trap switch furiously back and forth as if you’re being pulled helplessly from one era to the other through some sort of raging hyperactive wormhole. I don’t know which side you’ll end up on, but I highly recommend taking the trip.
This is the standout track of the FLONTIE STACKS EP which contains more disorientating energy from the Dutchman. According to the EP’s label, Mad Decent (who else?), Diplo sent over video of the time traveler spinning “insane rap songs that would span 4-5 genres in about 3 and a half minutes. From juke to pop to trap to hardstyle” and added “they were mind blowing.” Can’t disagree with that.
