GoldFFinch – 11th Hour EP (Preview)
Following a string of certified dance-floor slayers, fast-rising San Francisco label dirtybird leads into the summer season with an EP from Belgian duo GoldFFinch that undeniably takes listeners for a loop. Make no mistake, 11th Hour, GoldFFinch’s first release on the label, fits right in with the latest of the dirtybird catalogue with its heavy dosage of bass. It is rather their take on bass music that causes listeners to pause for a brief second: while some may expect summertime to indicate the onslaught of the wildest, loudest, danciest songs that artists can hash out in between drinks galore before Ibiza gigs, this music is more for the quiet, pensive summer nights spent with friends sitting by the campfire, drinking beers and star-gazing.
The title track is the latter image in aural form; the level of party that dirtybird has cemented in its image is taken down a few notches, letting the gentle notes enhance the sounds of your current environment. Sweet, delicate synths swirl fluently around muted drums, and every so often you can just hear the swift swoosh of a shooting star. The second track “Sultry Steel,” is still relatively quiet but more intense, as the bass hits a little deeper into the gut, contrasting with the lightness of the tropical-sounding steel drum melody; vocal samples momentarily grab at the soul before fading back into the waves of crashing beat patterns. The intricacy of these songs is simply amazing, and the mastering nears perfection. This record is definitely one to have handy for the long, winded summer nights of head-nodding and intimate afterhours gatherings.
11th Hour is available to preview below, and is scheduled to release on DRIP.FM later this week, and on Beatport July 1st.
