Hugo – Hugonomics EP

Audiojack’s label Gruuv puts out its second release of 2013 with the Hugonomics EP, featuring Turian-born producer Hugo on a four-track record boasting two original tracks alongside remixes from the label-head as well as Copy Paste Soul, whose remix for Alex Barck was posted here on ICGYH just days ago. In fact, we also posted the label’s first release of the new year back in March. Gruuv has undoubtedly churned out another steamy, bouncy, bass-filled EP that is sure to move the dance-floor.

The star track is the first, “Joint is Jumping,” which incites instant movement with its dirty 4/4 groove and vocal sample that takes on a melody of its own. The occasional intrusion of foghorn-like bass really just hits you in the face, taking you out of the hypnotic trance of the groove, and warbles back into the background so you can slowly re-enter the zone. The Audiojack remix dips a bit into deeper and darker ground, taking a nightclub-worthy track and elevating it to warehouse-status. It’s still as playful and groovy as the original, but much more mischievous, maybe even slightly sinister.

The second original, “Boot to Boot,” makes use of odd mumbling, reverbed vocal samples. It initially comes across as playing to the darker side of the house spectrum with its deep, drum-heavy rhythm and spaced-put sounds, but there’s a point in the song when airy synths slowly begin to swell from underneath, and just as quickly as they appear, they disappear back into the deepness. The Copy Paste Soul remix deletes the heaviness of the original and turns it into his signature warm deep house sound by capitalizing on the swelling synths and adding more lively, lighter patterns; only at the end does it dive off the deep end into a flurry of sound. This remix would be perfect for the daytime.

The Hugonomics EP is now available for purchase on Beatport, but you can stream the previews below.
