I Can Give You House: For those not yet familiar, who are the Stafford Brothers?
Stafford Brothers: We are Matt and Chris Stafford. We started our music career in Australia and it has taken us all over the world. We are currently based in LA.
ICGYH: How has the transition been moving to the States? You’re currently living with Tommy Trash, what’s the vibe like? Any chance for collaboration?
SB: Moving to LA has been amazing for us. It has changed our careers. We have new management and a new agent and we totally love the place. We’ve lived in a house with Tommy for the last year and the vibe has been great but he’s always on tour and we are in and out all the time as well. We have worked together on music before but Tommy is super busy at the moment.
ICGYH: You also have your own reality show? What has that been like? Do you find it intrusive when it comes to your artistic process? Do you think it is an accurate portrayal of your lives?
SB: We have had 2 seasons of our TV show which is now aired in 20 countries. It has been good for us, but it definitely didn’t help when it came to getting music done. We committed a lot of our time to filming, but we knew that would happen at the beginning. It definitely reflected our lives at the time, there were no scripts… it was “real”!
ICGYH: How did the Stafford Brothers begin?
SB: We were always playing instruments and really into music, but our first gig came when the club we always hung out at needed some DJs fast. We said we knew what we were doing, but we didn’t. We filled the club up with friends and just had a big party, then the club put us on every week. What we thought was a bit of joke has turned into our life!
ICGYH: How so you feel your sound has developed/changed since you began producing together?
SB: The biggest change for us was a trip to Ibiza that happened early in our career by winning a competition. Going there and experiencing the really big DJs, and the Balearic house sound, inspired us to do that when we came back to Australia.
ICGYH: What inspires you to make music? Where do you find inspiration?
SB: Seeing other DJs inspires us, as well as bands, and the Internet. Life in general! We work on music constantly and everyday it is different.
ICGYH: Give us an under-the-hood of your studio setup. What software DAW/plugins and hardware pieces do you use to produce?
SB: We use Logic 9 as the main DAW with Ableton re-wired. For plugins - Nexus/Sylenth/ACE/Massive/ANA/
ICGYH: There’s been a lot of discussion recently about DJ sets. How do you approach a club night vs. a festival. Do you arrange your sets in advance, do it all on the fly, or some of both?
SB: We always plan some records (mostly our own) that we are going to play but we never actually plan a full set. You have to be able to read a dance floor. Festivals you generally play a shorter set so there is a bit more energy and its a big stage, clubs can be so different depending where you are in the world, so I feel you have to read the dance floors a bit more and do more of it on the fly.
ICGYH: Name one dance music and one non-dance music artist you would like to collaborate with and why.
SB: Swedish house mafia so we could use all three of them individually! We have grown up with their music and I really like what they all do individually as well. Pharrell is someone who also very diverse and cool. I think his ideas would be amazing and what you could produce would be extremely different.
ICGYH: There are so many electronic dance music radio shows/podcasts nowadays. What sets ‘Something Big’ apart from the rest?
SB: I think first of all is that our music style is not the same as everyone’s, so you hear our sound. We are very interactive with the radio show and also the quality of our guests each week is huge. We have massive artists talking about the processes of making records and their collabs, rather than a straight up interview. Plus there are two Australian brothers hitting you on the airwaves!
ICGYH: What releases can we look forward to later this year?
SB: Our latest single hello has just gone platinum in australia and hit a couple of number 1 chart spots on Beatport, this will be getting a bigger push here in the USA. The future music anthem “hands up” comes out officially in a couple of weeks with some great remixesand then we have a song called “wicked child” with Jason Herd from the UK, so plenty coming!
