Jacques Greene & Tinashe – Painted Faces
Popular shoe brand adidas and Yours Truly dip a stylish foot into the world of electronic music with Songs from Scratch, “an original series that documents and delivers new songs from scratch.” The series features carefully crafted collaborations between rising producers and artists, including Jeremih x Shlohmo, Angel Haze x Lunice, and Danny Brown x Araabmuzik.
The most recent installment to come out of the woodwork is “Painted Faces,” by Canadian producer Jacques Greene and singer Tinashe. Greene’s affinity for featuring R&B-style vocals in his productions re-emerges as Tinashe’s soulful yet delicate voice floats over an experiential house rhythm that, if it could be touched, would be black velvet: smooth and sweet, but somberly so. The breakdown captures a bit of the trap sound that is the trend du jour, but it is done so in a subtle, tasteful manner. This collaboration suits both artists so well because they complement each other and balance each other out quite nicely; the vocals and production don’t compete for the spotlight. It’s something one could imagine on a worthy radio station, yet unique as to not get lost amongst the countless follow-the-formula pop songs churned out every few seconds.
While the song is available on Greene’s Soundcloud, he’s promised to give it away for free once it reaches 100K plays. Get to it!
