Major Lazer - Lazer Strikes Back Vol. 3

Major Lazer - Lazer Strikes Back Vol. 3 (ICanGiveYouHouse.Com)

As Major Lazer’s album-delay compensation continues to pile on remix after remix of “Jah No Partial” and “Get Free”, it’s Avicii who surprisingly (or perhaps unsurprisingly based upon his neon-country Ultra performance) breaks this volume free from monotony.

Lazer Strikes Back Vol. 3 features “Get Free” remixes three and four of the series (1/3 of the total tracks on all volumes combined). Add this to the third remix to “Jah No Partial” and it’s becoming harder and harder to be impressed by new variations.

Vato Gonzalez and CAMO UFOs, who comprise the other artists of this unit, fall victim to the over-saturation and fail to generate anything noteworthy. Even Major Lazer’s own remix to No Doubt’s “Settle Down”, while having its moments, ultimately doesn’t generate much excitement. But just when the apathy starts setting in, Avicii throws down an unexpected twist with his take on “Get Free”. Throwing Amber’s vocals off-rhythm over of a grimy bassline, he creates a jarring rendition that rivals the best of any volume.

Free the Universe should be ground-rumbling when it finally arrives April 15th. The remixes in the meantime are nothing to complain about, but the redundancy is starting to become a bit tiring. Thankfully, there have been a few gems scattered throughout such as the impressive Yellow Claw remix to “Get Free” on Volume 1, and Avicii’s creative rework here. Check out the new mixes below and see if you can join Major Lazer live on tour.
