Madeon - The City EP

Yesterday, Madeon released The City EP on his own popcultur imprint. The EP contains five tracks including the original and extended mixes of the title track, a new ‘live’ cut of Icarus as well as a remix by Fred V & Graffix and an additional remix of ‘Finale’ by Netsky.

Overall the EP is pretty decent. We’re quite familiar with all of the tracks, so it was nice to get some remixes to freshen things up. In an uncharacteristic move for most mainstream edm artists, Madeon enlists drum n bass producers for both remixes on the EP. While the Fred V and Graffix take has some good things going for it, I still prefer the original. However, Netsky’s remix really rings true by maintaining the accessibility and melody of Madeon’s original production, but infusing it with a dose of upbeat UK dnb. It’s nothing spectacularly complex, but good easy listening at a tempo that many commercial audiences are still warming up to.

The mix that really stood out to me though was the ‘Live Version’ of Icarus. It’s not much more than fleshed out version of the original, but the added elements such as a delicate piano interlude and some more tension-inducing builds, really complement the track and help it achieve its full potential.
