Daft Punk – Something About Us (Dr. Fresch Cover)

Posted on May 2, 2013 in Chill, Nu Disco

It takes a lot of confidence to cover music icons. With the release of their highly anticipated album Random Access Memories on the horizon, Daft Punk-mania is spreading to all parts of the world. In the few weeks since a mere snippet of their first single “Get Lucky” hit airwaves, bootlegs of the since-released song have been rampant throughout the Internet. The good thing about Daft Punk, though, is that we’ve had a love affair with them for about as long as we can remember, back when we were just kids twiddling with radio tuners in the car and bobbing our heads to classics such as “Around the World” and “One More Time.” This isn’t just a one-night affair. These guys are legends.

So, like I said: covering these guys takes major cojones. And right now, when everyone’s running with the new material, hearing endless remixes of the same song can get old quickly. Just when you feel like you’re on the brink of overexposure, Dr. Fresch has the cure. The LA-based producer administers a healthy dose of chill disco in his cover of “Something About Us,” bringing out the live instrumentation and some gorgeous, soulful vocals that really bring the song to life. The guitar in the beginning is worthy of a power-ballad solo, and with the addition of a bass-kick, the song commands attention with its controlled power. The simple, raw sound of singer Alex Dean’s voice gives the song an air of sincerity; its mere humanness is a beautiful contrast to the heavily edited vocals of the original song. To put oneself next to such an iconic level of talent is a task in itself, but Fresch manages well; I’m curious to see where this takes him as he explores the deeper end of the electronic spectrum.

But as they say, beauty is in the eye (in this case, the ear?) of the beholder. Take a listen below, and feel free to share with us your opinion of this Daft Punk interpretation.
