I Can Give You Sick Individuals [Interview]
Today the Sick Individuals released a brand new banger entitled ‘Free’. With early support from Nicky Romero, Axwell, and Thomas Gold, the original track looks to conquer airwaves and dance floors around the world. Following the huge success of ‘Soldiers’ and their remix of Nervo’s anthem ‘Reason,’ we had to reach out the guys for an interview to get a clearer picture of what makes up their signature ‘Sick Sound’.

I Can Give You House: For those who are not yet acquainted, tell us a little bit about yourselves?
Sick Individuals: Hi there! We’re Jim and Ray of the SICK INDIVIDUALS from Holland. The band was formed a few years ago while we were both studying Music Composition and Production at the Utrecht School of the Arts in Hilversum. You may know us for our remixes of Icona Pop, Nervo, Qulinez, and Danny Avilla.
ICGYH: How did the two of you begin producing as a duo?
Sick Individuals: We started producing together in 2010. We didn’t have a lot of money so every month we each fifty Euros to buy gear or otherwise invest in the Sick Individuals brand. The process moved inch-by-inch back in the day, but now we’ve begun taking giant leaps!
ICGYH: How has growing up in The Netherlands influenced your music? What makes your sound unique?
Sick Individuals: House Music has been a tremendous part of Dutch culture for years, so like many of the DJs and producers from here, we are influenced by decades of electronic music. We’ve always been trance fanatics. The big synths, massive drops, powerful melodies, and energetic build-ups are all part of our ‘Sick Sound’.
ICGYH: Give us an under-the-hood of your studio setup. What DAW/plugins and hardware do you use to produce?
Sick Individuals: We work with Logic and plugins like EXS24, ESP & ES2, Sylenth1, Lexicon reverb, Waves, not really something special in particular. As for hardware, we don’t use external compressors or eq’s, but if you can consider guitars as a piece of hardware, we definitely use those in our tracks!
ICGYH: What is your collaborative process like producing a new track? Do you produce together or do you divide particular pieces or instrumentation of the track between the two of you?
Sick Individuals: Sometimes we work separately from each other to finish up a track, but the best creative flow come whilst working together as a team in the studio! Our process often isn’t the same but overall Ray specializes in chord progressions, harmonies and mastering. Jim is strongest when it comes to beats, percussion and climaxes.
ICGYH: What is the most challenging part about making electronic dance music today?
Sick Individuals: In our opinion it’s all about delivering quality work, aiming for the highest level and believing in your own sound.
ICGYH: What has been your favorite gig so far? What made it so special?
Sick Individuals: It’s very hard to choose. We’ve had several great performances like a small tour through China and amazing gigs in Europe. Last December at the Ministry of Sound in London was really special. You can check out the footage here. And of course we can’t wait for Miami next week!
ICGYH: Name one EDM and one non-EDM artist you would love to collaborate with and why.
Sick Individuals: Axwell is an artist we would love to work with. He has a great sense of harmony and detail and is a really amazing producer and DJ! As for non-EDM, we’d like to work with every artist that has a great and unique voice and is passionate about what he or she does.
ICGYH: What advice would you give to young producers just starting out?
Sick Individuals: Make sure that your productions are tight and that they have enough information. Most of the time the productions of young artists aren’t at a professional level, so you have to find a way to be creative and original with your sound and harmonies. This is what we listen for in promos and demos. Find your own true sound, be different and never give up!
ICGYH: Can you give us any info on upcoming releases?
Sick Individuals: Our single ‘Free’ will be released the 11th of March on Big & Dirty. We’re also putting out a new track on Steve Angello’s new sub-label SIZE X soon. Stay tuned!
