Jack Beats – Somebody To Love EP
Building on their Careless EP, Jack Beats return with their second min-album of the year, Somebody To Love. While not quite as refreshing as Careless, the EP does explore some new and interesting territory for the UK duo.
Somebody To Love is nine tracks long, however the last four are just instrumental versions of the previous ones. The EP starts out with ‘Somebody To Love’ featuring Jess Mills, a radio-friendly tune that carries the signature warping voweled basslines that Jack Beats are known for. Second up is ‘Just A Beat’ an uncharacteristic tech-house offering that works excellently with their goofy, dark soundscape. Next is ‘About To Get Fresh’, which features Chiddy Bang and OV. The 112bpm selection was obviously inspired by their work with Dillon Francis on ‘Epidemic’ by lacks the same energy and drive of the latter. The vox from Chiddy and OV are worthless and bland, while the instrumental (especially on its own) feels lackluster and incomplete.
I was similarly ambivalent about ’Knock You Down’. My hopes were high for this track, but it just didn’t get me as amped as I wanted. Thinking back to on a classic Jack Beats track like ‘Get Down’, I was left wondering where all the spirit went. Fortunately, the EP wraps up on a stronger note with ‘Storm’, featuring Kid Harpoon. It’s an ambient electronica tune that is perfect for a chilled-out session.
All in all, Somebody To Love is hit and miss. Jack Beats has broken new ground but without completely realizing the intention. Let us know what you think.
