deadmau5 ft. Chris James – The Veldt
Deadmau5‘ new track ‘The Veldt’ is stunning, both in concept and execution. The title was inspired by a short sci-fi story written by Ray Bradbury in 1950, which I highly suggest reading because it’s tone and content resonate strongly within the track. The instrumental is a strong departure from what we heard on his last album, 4×4=12 and sounds much more reminiscent of the deadmau5 behind Random Album Title [round of applause].
Apart from being an extremely strong track on its own, the story behind its creation is well worth telling. Rather than locking himself away in seclusion, deadmau5 invited fans to watch as he produced what would become ‘The Veldt’ during a 24-hour live Ustream session in March. Bit by bit the track began to come together and by the end of the day, Joel posted a one-minute clip on his FML Soundcloud and mentioned that he’d soon have to begin figuring out vocals for it.
That night, vocalist Chris James came up with lyrics inspired by Bradbury’s story, uploaded them to his Soundcloud and sent off a tweet to deadmau5. Although nothing happened at first, by morning a torrent of support came pouring in for the unknown musician. Within a matter of minutes deadmau5 tweeted back:
All airing on his live stream, deadmau5 contacted Chris James to lay down a second verse as well as to make some minor tweeks to the mix, and rang his manager immediately to set up an official collaboration.
In one of his notorious rants, deadmau5 said of his new collaboration:
“…i was fucking nearly in tears. Not because i think he’s the best singer in the world… but because HE FUCKING GOT IT. TOTALLY and COMPLETELY got it.
i had previously stated on the demo that the song was loosely connected to the short story i read… the kid went and read the story, and did what i did. His verses are connected to me in that way, this track is pure. This is how inspiration is supposed to work. Even before hitting the play button on his soundcloud, i almost wanted to roll my eyes waiting for the first verse to have a mention about his last breakup, or this other bitch he thinks is hot, or how he was on his way to a club, or just how warm and fuzzy he felt about THA BEAT (or ‘tha bass’ for that mater).
fuck all that.
he righteously did his homework, and came up with just a few bang on verses that completely compliment the story and the mood, which is all i ever want from a song that contained lyrical content. Can’t give him props enough.”
‘The Veldt’ is a profound example of the power of social media. In one tweet, an artist went from obscurity to being signed on one of the largest electronic music labels out there. This kind of interaction has never before been possible… Truly amazing. I won’t attempt to regale you further with talk of the track’s sound, essence, construction, etc… Just take a couple minutes, read the short story, and listen to the track. It’s a beautiful piece of work.
The Veldt EP is set to release on June 25 and will include ‘The Veldt’ featuring Chris James, as well as the new track ‘Failbait’ featuring hip-hop icons Cypress Hill.
