New Years Eve 2011 at Pier 94 (AKA Avicii Throws a Rave in NYC): Review & Live Sets

2011 was the year that house music went mainstream. And Avicii was the one who brought it to the masses.

At the beginning of the year, very few people knew who the Swedish DJ/producer was. In fact, I distinctly remember going to see him play at LAVO New York in January 2011 and getting asked by friends, “Who’s Avicii?”  But, with the release of “Levels” – which is undeniably one of the biggest house anthems of all time – and with the popularization of his massive December 2010 BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix – which is a progressive house masterpiece – Avicii exploded. And so did house music. So it was only fitting that Tim Bergling (who’s 22 years old, by the way) throw a massive New Years Eve show in one of the best cities in the world to round out his major year.

Describing the event at Pier 94 as a “show” is probably a little bit inaccurate – I’d say it was basically rave status. Pier 94 is essentially an enormous warehouse, and the DJ booth looked out over a space that was about the size of a football field. While the event certainly wasn’t without some issues (write: a small room of about 40 or so porta-potties for about 10,000 or so people; a minor riot/stampede occurring in the disgusting porta-potty room before Avicii went on; ATMs with a $10 service fee; the main bar temporarily running out of water at around 3am; an average venue temperature of about 400 degrees…), it was a New Years Eve to remember. The crowd was crazy, the music was insane, and the night was intense.

Both Cazzette and Arty opened with unbelievable sets, and I expect big things from all those guys in 2012. And then, at around 1:45am, Avicii went on. He played a classic Avicii set: three hours of progressive house banger after progressive house banger. It was amazing. The best part about Avicii – beyond the fact that his music just simply makes everybody so, so happy – is that he truly loves his fans. And that really does come through in his live sets. He’s engaged, enthusiastic, high-energy, and smiling the entire time. I appreciate and respect that.

Instead of attempting to describe eight straight hours of music, I’m going to let the lives sets speak for themselves.
