AVICII at the Warfield SF (12/29/11)
Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Avicii at the Warfield in San Francisco for the second of his two shows, presented by At Night Management. When I got to the Warfield right around 11, the line for the show went an entire block down Market street, and wrapped around the corner towards Union Square. I knew from the fact that the 11pm was completely sold out that it was a going to be a big show, but I hadn’t seen a crowd as excited as this in ages.
When I walked into the venue Cazzette was already pumping the crowd up, banger after banger. From Electro House to Dubstep, the Swedish duo provided an excellent mix of original material and popular tracks. The Swedes played everything from Steve Aoki & Afrojack’s “No Beef,” to Tommy Trash’s “Future Folk.” I was excited to hear a lot of Cazzette material I didn’t recognize also, and am now very stoked on their upcoming releases.
Just after midnight, Avicii came onto the tables to a completely packed house. Mr. Tim Bergling went on to deliver one of the most energetic sets I have ever seen him play. This was also my first time seeing Tim perform at a venue other than a festival stage, and it was especially cool to see how loyal of a following he had with each of the show’s attendees.
Tim started with a remix of “Fade Into Darkness” that I had never heard before, and it was perfect way to bridge the personalities behind Tim’s set and Cazzette‘s. Avicii continued on to deliver what was in many ways a ‘greatest hits of 2011’ set – and it was exactly what people wanted to hear! Tim moved along in his set, dropping tracks like Fedde Le Grand’s remix of Coldplay’s “Paradise,” the Original Mix of Dirty South’s “Walking Alone,” and “Blessed” until he reached the peak of the set and dropped the Original Mix of “Levels.” The crowd went insane. I was also happy to hear Tim mix in more of the original sample from Etta James’s “Something’s Got A Hold On Me” – I thought that was awesome.
In addition to dropping many of his beloved hits, Avicii mixed and mashed acapellas from many other Dance anthems from the last few years, giving his set the vocal personality that the crowd yearned for. Two tracks Tim mashed that went over extremely well with the crowd were his mixes of ‘Seek Bromance’ and Axwell‘s “I Found You” and of Axwell’s version of Michael Calfan’s “Resurrection” with Adele’s “Someone Like You.” The use of pop acapellas on Progressive House tunes increased exponentially in 2011, and Avicii did a great job of incorporating this trend into his set.
The night was not only a success from a musical standpoint, but also in regards to the energy level of the crowd that attended. I also thought the demographic of concert goers was superb. Last night was also the first time I heard Avicii drop Dubstep – granted it was Skrillex‘s remix of “Levels,” but it was still great to hear Avicii branch out from House for a moment.
If you weren’t in San Francisco last night or didn’t have the opportunity to catch Avicii in 2011, don’t fear! 2012 is going to be an even bigger year for the Swede. In the meantime, take a glance at the set list from last night below!

I went to the 730 show and the Fade Into Darkness remix was by Albin Myers. Just one of the legit remixes from his set. Thanks for a list
