An Emerging Subgenre: Bounce
Over the years I’ve heard a lot of different styles of electro, house, etc., and I still remember the not-so-long-ago days when dubstep was emerging into the EDM scene. Before it was famous, it seemed like just a wobbly sound some DJs incorporated into their sets and productions. But after it became popularized by artists like Deadmau5, it blew up. I’m not at all saying that Deadmau5 created what we know today as dubstep, because he didn’t. But, he played a pivotal role in introducing wobbly synths and dubstep styles to people that had never heard that sort of music before. Recently, my friend Alex Krashinsky showed me some songs with a very distinct and specific sound that seem like they very well could be a new subgenre of house…. and we’re calling it ‘Bounce’.
It’s a very subtle, sort of hollow, yet bouncy sound. I wanna say it sounds a bit tribal, but it’s closer to miminal with a tech-house influence. The bass usually has a more prominent role in the foreground of the track rather than accompanying the synths. There’s usually a combination of bass drums and hi-hats in the background typical of regular, unadulterated house. But what’s interesting to me is that this type of sound can produce minimal tracks like ‘Devotion’ (posted below), and it can also produce eargasmic bangers like the Mike Candys & Jack Holiday ‘One More Time’ remix (also posted below). So its versatile. I actually dropped the One More Time remix in a set I was spinning at a party over the weekend and people went nuts. It’s something most people haven’t heard too much of because the artists that produce it aren’t really that big. Yeah, Bingo Players got some fame for the song ‘Cry’, but the majority of the music they produce is not that same style they’re getting attention for. I would love to see some famous DJs’ takes on this style, because it’s all I’ve been listening to since I first heard it. As with any other quality tunes, play these loud, wait for the drop, and then change your underwear, for full effect.

Are you serious? These are just Bigroom Tech house tracks… You guys should really try to learn about house music pre-2011. This article really annoyed me because you took a subgrenre/type of sound that already exists with label and gave it your own name. Also you called it new, but swedish house mafia would open their sets off with these types of records back in 2009, and end with the trance-influenced progressive house that compromises most of their sets now. While these may not be full fledge Tech tracks, what you describe as “Bounce” is just techy influences on progressive bigroom music. If this article was a throwback to techy bigroom music, that would’ve been great but it felt like you were discovering/realizing something for the first time. For someone who has been into this stuff for a long time really bothered me. Besides that, you guys have good posts. Just really needed to vent my frustrations. Cheers.
This is fkn grooveeyh!
If i had to listen to an hour+ of these types of tracks i would shoot myself. This is not a “subgenre”
